In recent weeks, the Kansas City Royals fired their president to replace him with JJ Picollo. The latter has the mandate to rebuild a club that is going into the wall.
And when everyone expected him to fire manager Mike Matheny, that’s exactly what he did. His pitching coach Cal Eldred also went through the wringer.
In three seasons at KC, Matheny went 165-218 and never came close to making the playoffs either.
Is it all his fault? No. On the other hand, the replacement of Ned Yost, the former manager who had won the World Series with the club, did not advance the club, it seems.
This season, several clubs (Angels, Phillies, Blue Jays, Rangers, White Sox, Marlins and Royals) have changed managers.
And you know what? Several guys are on the hot seat right now… including Dusty Baker in Houston. I dare to believe that Aaron Boone has something to gain, by the way.
Is quality candidates will be jostling at the gates to go manage the Royals? That remains to be seen for now.
I can’t wait to see what will happen with the managers this winter. It will be very interesting to follow and I think it will stir up a lot.
- Luis Arraez is happy with his batting championship.
- Mike Trout’s 40th homer, Shohei Ohtani becoming the first qualified player at bat and on the mound at the same time…and the Angels still eluded him.
