Ever since Jasson Dominguez signed his first contract with the Yankees, he’s been seen as a special prospect. nicknamed the Martianhe’s been compared to players like Mike Trout and Mickey Mantle, even before he’s played a game in North America.
Nothing less.
We agree that the comparisons were excessive, but the fact remains that Dominguez is capable of doing everything on a baseball field. He hits, he plays good defense and he’s very fast.
At only 20 years old, he probably still has a long way to go before playing in the Majors. However, according to what reports Michael Kay, we must not rule out the idea of seeing Dominguez spending time with the big club this season.
At least that is what is said within the organization.
That’s a bit of a surprise considering Dominguez hasn’t had a great season in AA (he’s batting .159 and has a .704 ERA). That said, the Yankees may think that a bit like Anthony Volpe, Dominguez’s youth could breathe energy into the club.
And beyond his batting, he walks at a blistering pace (he has 23 in 88 at-bats) and steals a ton (he has 10 through 21 games).
I don’t think he’s ready, but if he has a good month, maybe he’ll be called up in September (like Oswald Peraza was last year). At least it could be considered.
Right now the Yankees have so many injuries that they play guys like Jake Bauers and Franchy Cordero on the outfield on a regular basis. However, Dominguez is not an option at the moment, which leads me to believe that he is still far from making the jump.
But who knows, he might just be a good few months away from being a major league player…
