Chargers fire offensive coordinator, Brandon Staley looks saved

Brandon Staley can blow, the ax avoided him this time. The Chargers announced on Tuesday that they have fired Joe Lombardi, their offensive coordinator.

Quarterbacks coach Shane Day was also fired.

After leading 27-0 in the second quarter, the Chargers only scored three points and fell to the Jaguars in the first round of the playoffs. Someone had to pay the price.

Lombardi also pays for the weaknesses of his team on the ground, where it ranked 30th this season, as well as in the red zone, where only 54.1% of visits ended in a touchdown (17th in NFL).

The next coordinator will still have a good base to work from, since Justin Herbert has just broken Andrew Luck’s record for the most passing yards for a quarterback in his first three years in the NFL.
