Tyrese Haliburton is supposed to be the engine of the Pacers, but the engine unfortunately idled in last night's loss, in Game 1 of the series against the Knicks.
As in Game 1 against Milwaukee, Tyrese Haliburton starts this series against New York below 10 points. The playmaker only scored 6 points at 2/6 on shots at Madison Square Garden. To his two 3-point shots, however, the former King added 8 assists, 2 rebounds and 4 interceptions, but also 3 turnovers.
Since his return from injury at the end of January, Tyrese Haliburton no longer has the same impact. And his statistics have dropped further since the start of the playoffs. He averaged 20.1 points per game in the regular season, but against the Bucks, he only reached this total once.
He is also well aware of these problems. “Obviously, it's frustrating to be ahead throughout Game 1 and feel like we should have won it. Ultimately, it starts with me, and I will be better in Game 2,” promises Tyrese Haliburton. “No (they didn't do anything special to slow it down). They're a good defensive team, but I just have to be better. »
Tyrese Haliburton, target of opposing defenses
The Knicks had identified Tyrese Haliburton as “an attack all by itself” and therefore targeted him. “I got through it offensively. And I should have waited for the screen (on Myles Turner's offensive foul at the end of the game). Yes, I lost too many balls at the end. I just have to be better” he repeats.
For TJ McConnell, it makes sense that the holder is the target of opposing defenses. “He has been a central point of every team’s defensive game plan this year”says the replacement.
But the replacement leader still wants to salute the state of mind of the holder, who does not force. “He’s always taken two on the pick-and-roll. The most important thing for Tyrese is that he doesn't force a bad shot. He involves others and we trust him completely with the ball in hand,” concludes TJ McConnell.
The problem is that the Pacers will also need his offensive contribution to overcome the obstacle of the Knicks.
