Mike Malone, a real father for his players

Mike Malone has been on the bench for the Nuggets for eight years now, and he exudes a form of maturity and wisdom in all his speeches. The Denver coach is distinguished in particular by this benevolence towards his players. Of course, at the end of the regular season, he had been angry several times for their relaxation. But since the start of the playoffs, he has continued to put them forward, and this confidence is contagious.

As when he mentions the case Jamal Murray, returned to his best level after a serious knee injury. In Denver, we had chosen to be patient, even if he missed the playoffs last season. But it is paying off today.

“I took him in my arms, I told him that we cared about him”

“For Jamal, the most important thing this year was to be healthy and then to overcome the mental obstacle of remembering the level he had in the bubble, and how to surpass it” explains Malone. “I remember being on the bus with him, going to the airport after his injury at Golden State the next day. He had tears in his eyes. My message was to tell him, ‘Boy, you’re going to get over this, and not only are you going to come back, you’re going to be better.’ At that time, it’s really hard to believe. His first thought was to say to me, ‘Are you going to trade me?’ That was really it… ‘I’m a badly damaged…. Are you going to trade me now?’ I took him in my arms, I told him no, that we cared about him. ‘We love you. We will help you come back and you will be a better player. »

There is nothing more comforting for a player to have such support after suffering such a terrible injury. It’s the same message the Warriors sent to Klay Thompson. He had advised him to take his time, and to come back only when he was no longer apprehensive. This same Malone was also patient with Michael Porter Jr, whose back injuries plagued his early career. He paid tribute to him for his performance in Game 3.

“One of the things I like about our team is that there is no susceptibility. If a player is hot, we will lean on him, knowing that at some point in the game, we will need someone else to win. I thought tonight was a perfect example of that. It was Jamal in the beginning, it was Jamal and Nikola in the end, and a lot of guys in between stood out.” he underlines. “I have to say Michael Porter was outstanding tonight. For me, it’s a glimpse of the immense potential of Michael: 14 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and no loss of ball. One of my favorite actions of the night was when he caught the ball in front of the Lakers bench. He could have made a contested shot. He makes a final pass to Bruce Brown, who gives him a 3-point shot in the corner. We went from a good deed to an excellent deed. It shows Michael’s continued progression as a player. I’m very proud of Michael and his game. »
