The University of Louisville and the Warriors announced the death of Felton Spencer at the age of 55. According to his family, this former NBA pivot died in a hospital, without the cause of his death being revealed.
“He received the best care in his final hours from the staff at the University of Louisville Hospital, his beloved alma mater,” his sister wrote on social media. ” Our family thanks them, as well as all those who participated in his care. We are proud of everything he has done on the pitch and in his personal life. He was a kind and gentle giant whose physical presence will be greatly missed. We are heartbroken, but we are comforted by your thoughts and prayers. »
An old-fashioned swivel
Sixth choice of the 1990 Draft, Spencer will have played 640 matches, including more than 400 as a starter, first under the colors of Wolves where he collected a selection in All-Rookie Second Team with his 7.1 points and 7.9 rebounds on average. Three years later, this old-fashioned pivot was transferred to Jazz where he had the difficult task of replacing Mark Eaton. He rubbed shoulders with John Stockton and Karl Malone and his first season was remarkable with 8.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Unfortunately, the following season, he ruptured an Achilles tendon. A year later, he returned as a starter, but the Jazz parted ways with him during the offseason. Direction Orlando where he is given the place of… Shaq, gone to the Lakers.
In the end, he only played one game in Orlando, and he was transferred to the Warriors where he was going to do very decent things alongside Chris Mullin and Latrell Sprewell.
Removed from the prosecution in 2002 after a stint at the Knicks, he became an assistant at a small university in Louisville, in his native Kentucky.
