Yankees: Brad Ausmus hired as bench coach

The Yankees recently saw their bench coach, Carlos Mendoza, head to the New York Mets, where he will act as manager.

So they needed a replacement. The name of David Ross was circulated, but the former Cubs wanted either a managerial position or time to himself.

The name of Luis Rojas also circulated, but he obviously did not get the job. He will remain a goal coach for the Bombardiers.

It’s ultimately Brad Ausmus who will get the job.

Brad Ausmus is a former player who started (in the minors) in the Yankees organization. He ultimately never played in New York.

The Padres, Tigers, Astros and Dodgers counted on the player.

He then worked on the Padres staff before becoming the manager of the Tigers from 2014 to 2017. He then worked in the Angels offices in 2018 and as manager in 2019.

Most recently (2022), he served as the A’s bench coach.

Clearly, expect him to be there to support Aaron Boone, but also expect Yankees fans to demand that he be named manager of the club when things go wrong with Boone.

He will bring experience to the coaching staff Yankees. This is a great hire for a club that needs to move to the next level.
