With the San Diego Padres surging lately, it’s safe to say that the New York Mets are the biggest disappointment of the 2023 season.
If the big hitter Pete Alonso certainly has his share of blame for the setbacks of his family, he is far from being the only one responsible.
And Tommy Pham may have put his finger on the problem. Indeed, in a conversation with his teammate Francisco Lindor, the outfielder mentioned his concern.
Of all the teams I’ve played on, this is the least hardworking group of position players I’ve played with.
These words are full of meaning since Pham played for seven MLB teams and was therefore able to see a panoply of players. And of all these, it is those of the 2023 Mets who stand out, but in a negative way.
This explains that.
The 35-year-old knows what he’s talking about, having a strong work ethic and not having much tolerance for lack of effort. And by speaking to Lindor, he knew his words would resonate in the locker room.
In fact, before Pham left in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Lindor told him: “Hey man, thanks for teaching me to work hard again.” »
While Jeff McNeil doesn’t completely agree with what Pham said, Brandon Nimmo believes everyone in the organization needs to look in the mirror.
Each person must evaluate their work ethic individually. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Ultimately, much of this depends on individuals and what they are willing to do.
This will therefore have to change next year, otherwise the results will be the same. After all, the club has been historically bad and we understand better why.
