Rosters should have more than 26 spots in April

Let’s put ourselves in the shoes of the pitchers of the last 24 months. First, their 2020 camp was cut short and they didn’t know how to keep fit for a season to be determined. They finally had a 60-game season.

Then, in 2021, we tripled their workload, we took away the spider tack in the middle of the season, we changed the composition of the balls and finally, we placed them on sick leave. For 99 days, they had no access to their regular specialists.

And there, we give them a very small camp for a marathon of 162 games.

Besides, is that why the teams are currently looking for reinforcements on the mound?

I would also not be surprised to see Rob Manfred want to generate offense by changing the ball again to make it more conducive to long balls.

So I predict a lot of pitching injuries in 2022. At the start of the year, the starters won’t be ready like in 2021, let’s say.

That’s why I fully support MLB’s plan to have, for April only, a roster of 28 or 29 players instead of 26.

Thus, more relievers will be able to help the starters.

And that will help AAA guys to have games (and therefore pay) in the Majors a little more.

I consider that pitchers won’t have it easy and helping them, like in 2020, is a great solution. After all, the last thing baseball needs right now is to see its best pitchers on the sidelines in a pretty intense way.

  • We wish good luck to Miguel Andujar.
  • Dave Roberts is approaching a contract extension.
  • The former Jays finds a job.
