The Marlins have been doing more than well since the start of the season. My colleague Félix Forget spoke about it today in a paper on the classification of the National.
One reason for the Marlins’ success? Eury Perez.
A few days ago, my colleague Francis Rochon wrote precisely about what made the young man so special. And the least we can say is that he continued to perform well.
But since he’s only 20, the Marlins decided to protect him. Their solution? Reward his good performances (2.36 average in more than 50 rounds) by sending him to the minors.
It’s not uncommon to see youngsters returning to the minors, either for performance (like Alek Manoah) or to protect the youngster.
Giving him too many innings compared to the previous year is not ideal, which sometimes leads teams to send a youngster to the minors.
The plan is to call him back by the end of the season in preparation for the playoff race.
Note that Pedro Martinez said, on social networks, that he was eager to sit down with the young man to explain to him the dark side of the business.
It is true that there is surely a service time control somewhere in this story. After all, it happens in MLB – and in places like Miami, it’s just as likely.
Too bad for the youngster, but we’ll see if the decision will pay off.
