Snatch a Game 6 after being down 3-0? An already rare performance

Can the Boston franchise succeed where the Lakers, against Denver in the Conference Finals, and so many before have failed? The question begins to arise after the victory of the Celtics in Game 5 against the Heat.

Indeed, in the history of the NBA, and before the outcome of this Eastern Conference final, 150 teams had been led 3-0 in a series. And if we know that none has ever managed to turn the tide to finally win, few are already those who have remained alive for more than one match.

If we dive into detail, we note that 92 times out of 150, or 61% of the time, the series ended in four matches. Like the Nuggets did against the Lakers a few days ago. 44 times (29%), it took Game 5 to conclude.

Then comes the case of Boston this season, which became only the 15th team to snatch a Game 6. Of the previous 14, 11 have lost this sixth round. This was the case of the Raptors in the first round against the Sixers in 2022 for example.

The possible exploit for Boston?

Finally, there are only three teams left (2%!) who have accomplished the feat of pushing the series to an end after a 3-0. It was the Knicks during the 1951 Finals against the Royals, then the Nuggets against the Jazz in the 1994 Western Conference semi-finals. Finally, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks had come very close to correctional in the first round against the Blazers in 2003, before finally getting out.

Can the Celtics become the fourth team to snatch a decisive game? Game 6 will give the answer. Without forgetting to specify that in the three previous cases, none of the teams trailing 3-0 had home advantage for Game 7. However, the 2022 finalists will play at home if they win the sixth set in Miami…
