Kevin Huerter: “I had my best season last year and my worst this year”

“Frustrating is the word. Even before the injury, there were a lot of ups and downs, and more downs than previous seasons. » In two sentences, Kevin Huerter has said almost everything about its 2023/24 financial year. All that remains is to develop and go into details.

The Kings shooter had a premature end to the season, injured in March and then operated on his left shoulder, just a few days before the play-in. He did not participate in the victory against the Warriors nor in the defeat against the Pelicans.

Clumsy 3-point

Then, his performances were less successful: 10.2 points on average (his worst, after his first season) at 36% success at 3-pts. He had never been so clumsy in this area. He even lost, for a few days, his starting place in December 2023…

“I probably had my best season among the professionals last year and then my worst this year, so it evens out”, explains Kevin Huerter.

The Kings have made a big effort to improve their defense this season. Did the shooter pay off for his efforts on this side of the field afterwards, when he had to find the target?

“I don’t think it’s necessary to sacrifice one for the other. The best players and best teams in the league can do both,” he assures. “I think our team is capable of it. Me, as a player, too. »

A season on a roller coaster

In November 2023 then January and February, he shot 39% at 3-points. But he had missed the start of the season then his month of December. Yo-yoing is obviously not ideal for a shooter.

“We come back to frustration”delivers the former Hawks. “There were conversations behind the scenes, attempts to understand things, what we were doing, what the coaches and players were thinking, to be on the same page. We had cycles all season. I felt like I was going through cycles. I played well for a few weeks, then not so well for a week or two. »

We must now put this frustrating season behind us and look to the future.

“I still have four weeks left with the sling. I have 12 weeks to wait after the operation to resume shooting and playing the field. I'm a little ahead of schedule, so I'm hoping to resume contact in August. I should be ready for training camp in September”he announces.
