When we look at Canada’s roster for the World Baseball Classic which kicks off on March 7, there is one name that stands out. It is that of Freddie Freeman, the star player of the Dodgers.
Freeman was born in Fountain Valley, California, but he also has Canadian citizenship thanks to his parents who are from Ontario. On paper, our National Team is far from competitive, so why did Freddie choose it over Team USA?
Well for him, it’s a great opportunity to put his story and that of his family in the foreground. His mother, Rosemary Freeman, died when he was 10. Thus, it honors her memory by representing the country where she was born.
When the Canadian team hits the field, there will certainly be stories about Freeman. And, each time, there will be mention of his origins and why he chose Canada. He will take this opportunity to pay tribute to his family.
Freedie Freeman is quite the baseball player, admittedly. Beyond his talent, we must be proud to have a man with great values like him in our team. And who knows, maybe his talent will bring us some wins.
