Towards a change of starting five at the Warriors?

The narrow victory against the Blazers did not reassure the Warriors, still looking for consistency and efficiency after a quarter of the season. Steve Kerr assures that he has a rich squad, with a rotation of 10-11 players, and that it is complicated to give playing time to everyone. But his comments do not only concern the replacements, since the Golden State coach does not rule out changing his starting five.

“The puzzle doesn’t work this year,” notes Kerr. “A lot of players are playing well, but we may have to consider changing the starting five from game to game, depending on the opponent. I would always prefer to rely on something stable, but we haven't established anything this year. We are a quarter of the way through the season, so we have to think about all of this.”

The largely negative results of the historic five

So far, due to suspensions and injuries, Steve Kerr has already used nine different starting fives! Only Erik Spoelstra, used to DIY in Miami, used more. On paper, the starting five still consists of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney. A five who played 113 minutes together, and their differential is largely negative: -25! According to ESPN, this is simply the Warriors' worst five…

“I was really patient and hoping that our starting five from the last two years would get into tune,” Kerr recalls. “It's easier to play and coach when everyone knows exactly where they should be. It's also easier for players to take on a role when there's a fixed rotation and the stars are playing well, so the puzzle fits together.”

Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins too protected?

But this “puzzle” doesn’t fit together well, and Kerr could change five depending on the opponents. “Every night will be different with this team, and that’s what I’m figuring out. Our needs seem different depending on each match, depending on how the game is going. It's difficult to predict what will happen every night, it's also difficult to play 10 or 11 players. … We don’t know exactly who’s going to play every night.”

According to ESPN, the young Warriors are annoyed by Kerr's favoritism towards his veterans. Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins missed their start to the season, but they are not worried. Until when ?

“We must take into account the human, the injuries, the rhythm”, concludes the Warriors coach. “We have not found clarity. I try to get my guys going, calm them down and give everyone a chance.”
