Spurs test playmakers with different profiles

The summer priority for Spurs will be to find the playmaker, more of a shooter, who can get the best out of Victor Wembanyama, but also give him space. The names of Chris Paul, Trae Young and Darius Garland have circulated, but immediately, the managers are trying players in anticipation of the Draft. With their 4th and 8th choices, the Spurs will liven up the Draft, and they could also make an exchange.

In the meantime, they are not neglecting the second round, with their 35th and 48th picks, and it seems that they are looking to recruit a playmaker. And rather an experienced leader. Not a one-and-done.

A teammate of Bronny James

The proof with Boogie Ellis, aged 23. First trained in Memphis under Penny Hardaway, he came out of USC, like Bronny James, and he did his workout at the Victory Capital Performance Center, and Gregg Popovich was there.

“I experienced different situations, lots of ups and downs, lots of emotions”, tells this shooter leaderwho has the same agent as Tre Jones. “I learned a lot on and off the field. Having this experience and years under my belt gives me an advantage. »

USC's top scorer with 16.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game, Ellis shoots 42% from 3-point range with seven attempts per game! “At university, I shot very well, and I was able to spread the play. I can do everything, score under the circle, at 3-points and from mid-range. By playing with someone like Wembanyama, I will make his life a lot easier.”

A passing leader

This week, the Spurs also tried Houston point guard James Shead. Like Ellis, he completed his university studies, and this season he averaged 13.2 points, 6.2 assists and 2.3 steals. With 33% at 3-points, we have confirmation that he does not have the same profile as Ellis, but he is a real playmaker. He is also banking on his experience to convince the Spurs.

“I will be able to help more quickly than a player who is still developing”he believes. “I'm older, I'm experienced and I won a lot in college, I have a winning mentality, a lot of intangibles I can fall back on. »
