Tuesday, Stephen Curry was celebrating his 35th birthday, and time does not seem to weigh too much on his talent and efficiency. Certainly, the small glitches multiply, and it takes longer to recover, but his 29.6 points, 6.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds on average are remarkable, and nine months ago, he won his 4th title and his first Finals MVP trophy. Under contract until 2026, when he will be 38 years old, the leader of the Warriors does not rule out extending the pleasure. Like LeBron James, he does not necessarily set limits.
“What I feel today is not what I imagined I would feel at 35. This number seems crazy, but in my head, I feel like I have a lot left to do” he tells Andscape. “I always appreciate the work I do. who knows what [l’avenir] will be done ? I’ve spoken to Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and other athletes who have crossed that line. I know the job of quarterback is different, but we can control ourselves [mentalement] so as not to project too quickly. They’ve done a really good job of disciplining themselves to focus on the moment. They feel they can still play. I try to stay in this mode. Thirty-five years is a big step, but the next one is 40 years. Seen how I feel, who knows? »
The five titles of Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan in the viewfinder
If Stephen Curry plays five more years, his record could still evolve, and the title won in 2022 has completely reignited his thirst for success. He is thus fully aware that each new title will place him even higher in the hierarchy of the best players in history.
“That would count more than anything, because at one point before last season we thought we were finished” recalls the leader of Golden State. “So it’s a matter of desire, and we obviously realize that each new title won places you on another level of legend, among those who have won the most at the highest level. Obviously, no one will be able to catch up with Bill Russell. But Jordan won six, Kobe five, Tim Duncan’s Spurs… So it’s all about the inherent legacy that we continue to create, even though we’ve done a lot already and that’s why we continue to working tirelessly to make it a reality again. »
With four NBA titles, Stephen Curry has already equaled LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal, but he can now target Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Magic Johnson, and why not Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Additional titles that could make him the best point guard of all time in the eyes of the general public.
