Derrick White will be the starting point guard for the Celtics

“I didn’t plan that far, it’s still July, right? » dropped Joe Mazzulla when a reporter asked him who his starting point guard would be. Even if there are still more than two months before the resumption of the regular season, the Boston coach has already considered the question.

For him, at instant T, it is Derrick White who holds the rope to replace Marcus Smart, transferred to the Grizzlies. “Two-way player”, capable of being a passer, the 29-year-old rear has successfully moved from San Antonio to Boston and could therefore inherit more responsibilities in the Celtics’ five major.

“Derrick will be our starting playmaker, and he will be one of our starting guards”said Joe Mazzulla. “We have the opportunity to play in different ways. We have the ability to play small and big, and depending on the changes we make, it opens up a lot of opportunities for Derrick, Payton (Pritchard) and Malcolm (Brogdon).”

The C’s coach will be able to adapt according to the profile of the opposition, which also requires the involvement of the competition, Malcolm Brogdon and Payton Pritchard in this case. The latter appears to be the big winner of the off-season since he will recover part of Smart’s playing time.

“I think it’s very important that these three have the opportunity to grow and help each other to progress on both sides of the pitch. These three guys at their backs are part of who we are and what we need to do in attack and defence.”he added.
