Bennedict Mathurin quickly distinguished himself by his ambition among the 2022 rookie class. Chosen by Indiana, he quickly put his words into action by delivering a very promising rookie year, with a nice line of stats to boot, announcing a sophomore season that will again rhyme with ambition.
Invited to Treviso to attend the Eurocamp, the Canadian fullback spoke about this first year rich in lessons and the follow-up he hopes to give to his career with one word in mind: winning, he who quickly digested his fourth place in the rookie of the year ranking, behind Paolo Banchero, Jalen Williams and Walker Kessler.
“I had a pretty good season overall, there were a few games where I could have been better. But it does not matter. It doesn’t drive me crazy, I don’t blame anyone. I will try to come back next year and have a better season.”, did he declare. “I want to be the best player possible.”

His rookie season was not always rosy, however, since his performance dropped in the middle of the campaign as the famous “Rookie Wall” approached. But Bennedict Mathurin hung on and his ability to score close to the circle, and to provoke faults from opposing defenders, bodes very well for the future.
Among those who helped him progress, he notably cited the valuable contribution of his coach, Rick Carlisle.
“Rick and I have grown closer over the season, and even more so in the offseason. He’s a great guy and like you said he was tough on me, but that’s what I’m looking for. He always wants the best for me and he is eager to help me grow even more as a player, but also as a person. I am extremely grateful to Rick”he added.
For his coach as for him, the coming season will be like that of confirmation for these Pacers around whom the enthusiasm has returned, thanks in particular to Tyrese Haliburton or him.
“The only thing I’m thinking about right now is helping my team win. I feel like I have an important role in my team and I will have an even more important one next year. The objective will be to try to help my team qualify for the playoffs.he continued before speaking of his association with Tyrese Haliburton on the back positions as a “blessing”. “We have a lot of young talent in the team. Indiana is looking to build something with Ty, me and others. This is a good thing. I look forward to spending many more years with him and to having a good run”.
