NHL: the Hurricanes offer themselves an 11th consecutive victory

The Carolina Hurricanes continued their momentum with an 11e straight win with a 5-4 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Derek Stepan scored twice for the Canes who have now amassed at least one point in their last 17 outings. Antti Raanta stopped 24 pucks for his sixth straight win.

Andrei Svechnikov scored the only goal in the shootout as the Hurricanes keeper got ahead of Tomas Tatar, Jesper Bratt and Jack Hughes. Bratt still had a strong game with two goals and an assist.

Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 43 saves.

Both teams put on quite a show in the third period. Bratt first leveled the score 2-2 in the seventh minute of play. Stepan gave the lead to the Canes just under two minutes later with his second goal of the game.

Nico Hischier brought both teams back to square one again by completing a spin around the net 34 seconds later. With less than five minutes left on the clock, Martin Necas found the back of the net to send both teams into extra time.
