NHL: Connor McDavid scored the goal that made the difference in a victory

Connor McDavid put on a show once again and the frustration was well felt as the Tampa Bay Lightning lost 5-3 to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

The Oilers’ star forward was under close surveillance, but he managed to get away in the pocket late in the first period. Except that Patrick Maroon restrained McDavid who stumbled on the ice. Frustrated at having received a penalty on the streak, Maroon pushed McDavid back onto the ice when he got up. It was enough for a scrum to follow.

On the power play, McDavid charged Maroon when he joined Leon Draisaitl who found the back of the net. It was the 85e point of the season for McDavid at his 47e match. He thus became the fastest player to reach this mark in a season since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr during the 1995-1996 campaign.

The last time Evander Kane faced the Lightning was on November 8, and it was during that game that he suffered a cut on his wrist.

With less than three minutes to go in the first period, Kane was shoved in the back near the ramp by Nikita Kucherov. Kane countered by tripping Kucherov with a tripped leg, but that move also knocked down a linesman who appeared to cut a hand on the streak. The latter retired to the locker room.

Maroon had to answer for his gesture at the expense of McDavid in the second period when he threw away the gloves with Klim Kostin.

The Oilers took the lead 3-1 after Zach Hyman netted, but Tampa came back into the game. After reaching 500 goals the day before, Steven Stamkos found the back of the net. Brayden Point then deftly redirected a shot from Victor Hedman to level the score before retreating to the locker room.

McDavid made the difference in the match with his 39e goal of the campaign. Hyman completed the scoring in an empty net and on the streak, Draisaitl collected a 45e assist this season.

At the Oilers, Vincent Desharnais was an accomplice on the net of Ryan McLeod early in the game.
