Cleveland is ready to take out the big check to keep its tight end.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns are ready to do anything to keep David Njoku. Planned as a free agent, the club absolutely wants the tight end back and is “prepared to pay him the 10 million dollars per season that he will find on the market”. Cleveland is said to have been working on the file for “several months” and would like to obtain a signing before mid-March and the start of the free agency.
Njoku is not an elite wide receiver, however. In 16 games last year, he received 36 passes for 475 yards and 4 touchdowns. His career best performance dates back to 2018, counting for 56 receptions, 639 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Browns have Austin Hooper in their roster, who could be the first collateral victim of this choice. With 38 receptions, 345 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2021, Hooper will weigh $9.5 million in payroll this year. Cleveland won’t keep two big contracts at the position.
