First very big surprise of the 2024 draft. The Falcons have made the choice of the (distant) future with quarterback Michael Penix. A choice that can only raise questions knowing that the Georgia franchise signed Kirk Cousins for 4 years during the offseason.
Michael Penix was frankly not expected so high. The Huskies player, although brilliant with his team in 2023, remains above all a gamble.
And at 23, with Cousins under contract for 4 years, the question arises about the age at which he will be required to start his starting career. Furthermore, Penix carries with him a heavy history of injuries.
Michael Penix, the future of the Falcons… but when?
The Falcons, with a talent-rich roster, could continue to accumulate talented starters to aim for the playoffs in 2024. But they considered the Penix opportunity unavoidable.
Having passed through the universities of Indiana and Washington, the rookie threw 36 touchdowns for 11 interceptions in 2023. He also scored 3 times on the ground.
As a reminder, Kirk Cousins is 35 years old. By recent NFL standards, that leaves him with a few more years, and makes Atlanta's pick even a little more surprising.
