Panthers – Falcons (25-15): Carolina gets her revenge

Carolina Panthers (3-7) – Atlanta Falcons (4-6): 25-15

After an epic first game by the script 2 weeks ago, the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons found themselves in Charlotte in the wind and rain to open Week 10 NFL.

In a game where the game was mostly on the ground, it was the Panthers who won thanks to their defense. Conceding 5 sacks, the Atlanta offensive line was suffering as well as Marcus Mariota (19/30, 186 YDS, 2 TDs, INT). The Falcons quarterback may have flattering stats, may not be helped by his receivers, but he has shown his limits. The question of the titular quarterback could therefore be on the table during the next week on the side of Atlanta.

Missed interceptions

Despite Bakey Mayfield’s 2 touchdowns against the Bengals, the Panthers’ first offensive series is led by PJ Walker (10/16, 108 YDS). The latter is not far from being intercepted by cornerback Darren Hall in the end zone.

Same thing for Marcus Mariota, not far from being intercepted by Panthers safety Xavier Woods. 2 missed opportunities by the defenses which end with a field goal from Eddie Pinheiro for Carolina and a punt from Bradley Pinion for Atlanta. (3-0)

Atlanta upside down

While we thought that Carolina was falling through with problems in the execution of plays, a very good punt from Johnny Hekker will allow the ground defense of the Panthers to shine. Consequently, the missed punt (or not helped by the wind) of Pinion will be sanctioned immediately by Carolina.

Indeed, Laviska Shenault Jr. took the opportunity to score the first touchdown of the game on the run. He benefits from the good blocks of his teammates DJ Moore and Terrace Marshall Jr., but also from the help of Atlanta linebacker Rashaad Evans who hooks his teammate Jaylin Hawkins, yet well placed to stop the Panthers receiver.

Right after, Marcus Mariota throws an interception on Jaycee Horn, his 7th of the season. Carolina took the opportunity to add 3 more points to close a 10-0 in 3 minutes. (13-0)

Battle of the Trenches won by Carolina

After a field goal from Younghoe Koo just before halftime, it is now Atlanta who hits a very good punt by Bradley Pinion, forcing Carolina to return the ball in its own half of the field. And after a 6-game streak and despite poor reads from Mariota, rookie Drake London (5 REC, 38 YDS, 1 TD) is found by the Falcons quarterback to cut the mark.

A short-lived reduction since the Panthers will restore the gap with a touchdown on the run from 12 yards from the inevitable D’Onta Foreman (31 carries, 130 YDS, 1 TD), his 4th of the season against the Falcons. And we help each other between the kickers. Indeed, after Younghoe Koo, it is now Eddie Pinheiro who misses the extra point. (19-9)

Atlanta so near, so far

The Panthers kicker catches up by adding 3 new points. The timing for Atlanta and Marcus Mariota to flout their football. First of all, on 3rd&10, Marcus Mariota throws the ball which would have been an interception if it had not been sacked by Frankie Luvu, author of a big game. On the next attempt, Brian Burns manages (finally) to sacking the Falcons quarterback which allows Carolina to recover the ball.

The Panthers do not benefit and, on the contrary, it is Atlanta which returns to the game through the air with a receiving touchdown from KhaDarel Hodge. Touchdown again unconverted by Younghoe Koo who remains 7 points clear. (22-15)

Finally, the Panthers defensive line finished the job with 2 sacks from Marquis Haynes Sr on the same series which crowned the fine performance of the entire defensive squad of Steve Smith’s team.
