[NCAA] TCU – Georgia (7-65): Easy, Georgia goes down in history

The season of college soccer (CFP) ends with an unprecedented poster in the final at SoFI Stadium in Los Angeles. The Georgia Bulldogs are defending their championship title against surprise runners-up Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, TCU says.

This is the last opportunity for prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft to shine before making their decision about their future for next season (draft, transfer portal or return to college).

Prospects eligible for the 2023 NFL Draft mentioned in bold in the game summary

Summary of the match

There was no game between Georgia and TCU. The first half is a demonstration masterfully led by Stetson Bennett, author of 4 touchdowns (3 passing, 1 running).

He is not the only one to have shone. Aggressive, the defense does its part with the main protagonist, Javon Bullard. The sophomore cornerback recovers a stray fumble from TCU receiver Derius Davis, provoked by Christopher Smith, and twice intercepts TCU quarterback Max Duggan.

Each Georgia offensive play has averaged at least 9 yards. To top it off, Georgia’s punter didn’t even come into play in the 1st half as Georgia walked on a TCU team, completely paralyzed by the challenge of the final despite a ground touchdown from Max Duggan.

The second half will turn into a humiliation for TCU, suffering another 4 more touchdowns on defense (including 2 from freshman Branson Robinson) and sacks suffered in spades by the TCU offensive line.

Georgia thus wins its 2nd college football trophy. But, it is the first team to have done it 2 years in a row under the new CFP formula. They also broke a university finals points record (BCS and CFP combined) with 65 points, overtaking Alabama which put 52 in Ohio State.

Finally, Georgia ends the season undefeated. For a team that lost 15 starting players who left for the Draft last year, it’s strong!

Man of the Match: Stetson Bennett IV (QB, Georgia)

A magnificent first half where the statistics are mind-blowing: 13/17, 213 yards, 2 passing touchdowns. He also produced 3 carries, 39 yards for 2 touchdowns.

Well helped by his offensive line, the veteran quarterback had a high-flying game, always making the right decisions, while being precise. It’s simple, every attack he made in the 1st half resulted in points.

We had to wait for the start of the 3rd quarter to see the TCU defense stop him. But it was only a flash in the pan as he continued to distribute 2 more touchdowns for Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey before giving way to Carson Beck in the last quarter.

For his last university game, he delivered the best score of his course with the following statistical record: 18/25, 304 yards, 4 passing touchdowns in addition to 2 running touchdowns.

What conclude a beautiful and atypical university career before being drafted next April? The future will tell.

Players who have shone

  • Broderick Jones (OT, Georgia)
  • Sedrick Van Pran (OL, Georgia)

The entire offensive line shone in Georgia. Offensive tackle Broderick Jones distributed pancake after pancake to the TCU defensive line which he totally dominated. Center Sedrick Van Pran was also valuable, especially in running plays and on Kendall Milton’s running touchdown.

With their performances, it is certain to see them drafting if they show up. Broderick Jones is expected in the first round around 15th place. Sedrick Van Pran can play center or guard, his name should be called between the 3rd and 5th round.

Another player to have shone: Brock Bowers (TE, Draft 2024)

He could have been the other man of the match. Already brilliant last season in the final against Alabama, the Georgia tight-end star did even better this year in the final.

Dominating in all the offensive game phases in which he was involved, the player from the state of California (!) achieved a crazy first half (102 yards) before being rewarded with a touchdown in second half time.

He’s going to be THE player to watch for the 2024 Draft as a tight-end.

The player who disappointed

  • Kenny McIntosh (RB, Georgia)

We could have mentioned the entire TCU team. From quarterback Max Duggan (2 interceptions) to the defense led by Dee Winters or Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson via receiver Quentin Johnston (only 1 reception). Every TCU player, without exception, missed their game. A real ordeal.

If we can give a (small) disappointment on the Georgia side, it would be running back Kenny McIntosh. Despite 50 yards, he did not put a touchdown and lacked patience and intelligence in reading the blocks of his teammates.

And now?

The players of the 2 teams, as well as the other players of the 131 university teams, now have until January 16 to declare themselves in the NFL Draft, which will take place from April 27 to 29.

See you next season!
