[Free agency] Offensive line: who wants the champion?

Before the free agency, DNA of Sports offers you its traditional Top 5 free agents which will be available at each position on March 15. We continue with the men of the offensive line.

To protect their quarterback, teams are always on the lookout for reinforcements and bargains for their offensive line. While the 2023 class is nothing exceptional from a talent point of view, many players could prove to be good shots for the buying teams.

1. Orlando Brown – 27, tackle

2022 Stats (17 games played, 6 penalties, 4 sacks allowed)

The defending champion will be the most courted offensive lineman of the offseason. After a complicated start to the season, the left tackle finished very well becoming a solid protector for Patrick Mahomes. In addition, Brown has performed well under two opposing offensive schemes (Ravens and Chiefs) which proves his versatility and his ability to succeed everywhere.

It’s unlikely to hit the market after being tagged in 2022, but who knows…

The ideal destination: Kansas City Chiefs

Continue to protect the best quarterback in the league and try to win new titles. Why look elsewhere? For Kansas, there could be the temptation to believe that Mahomes’ game can get rid of a top tackle. After having worked so hard in 2021 to rebuild this offensive line, it would be a shame to start all over again in 2023.

2. Mike McGlinchey – 28, tackle

2022 stats (17 games played, 10 penalties, 6 sacks allowed)

If the player has had a few injuries in the past, he has been able to limit major absences in 2022 to establish himself as a solid tackle.

His main strength is in the ground game to open gaps, especially in Kyle Shanahan’s zone system. However, reducing it to that would be a mistake. McGlinchey has progressed in the aerial business by allowing 5% pressure on his snaps the past two seasons compared to more than 7% at the start of his career.

The ideal destination: San Francisco 49ers or Chicago Bears

The San Francisco system allows a certain valuation of offensive linemen. Team calibrated to play the race for the title, it is not certain that Mike can find much better elsewhere. Of course money can be a game changer, and in that case an in-demand team like the Bears might be a destination to watch.

3. Isaac Seumalo – 29, guard

2022 Stats (17 games played, 6 penalties, 1 sack allowed)

Seumalo isn’t the biggest talent on this list, but he might just be one of the strongest. The guard is probably coming off his career-best season and seems to have fully recovered physically.

In particular, he finished the season as a cannonball in the passing game sector by not conceding any quarterback hits after week 11 and despite protecting 2 quarterbacks with different styles.

The ideal destination: Los Angeles Rams

The temptation would be to stay in Philly, but the Eagles could look elsewhere. For Seumalo, the Rams would therefore be a good option to hold in a block system which should suit him. For the Rams, Seumalo would be an improvement on the line with that versatility to play left or right.

4. Kaleb McGary – 28, tackle

2022 Stats (17 games played, 5 penalties, 6 sacks allowed)

This is a case that will make more than one team think. Selected in the 1st round by the Falcons, McGary did not convince on his first years to the point that Atlanta decided not to play his 5th year option in 2022. A logical choice until then, except that…

In 2022, the lineman “exploded” by improving his running game and protection (according to advanced statistics). Shouldn’t we see more of the success of Arthur Smith’s game plans and the fact of playing in a system with so many racing actions? Positive in 2022, but strong questions… McGary is a real challenge for the teams during this free agency.

The ideal destination: Atlanta Falcons

The player has finally found the right fuel with Arthur Smith. The system corresponds to it, so much to extend at home.

5. Ben Powers – 26, guard

2022 Stats (17 games played, 1 penalty, 0 sack allowed)

He is one of the best guards available this offseason. Very good in the racing game, Powers especially distinguished himself in 2022 by his abilities in the aerial game.

By allowing zero sacks and a pressure rate of 2.5% on pass game snaps (2nd in the league in his position), the Ravens player has proven that he can bring a lot in the aerial game and should therefore find interest from more aerial teams than Baltimore.

The ideal destination: Buffalo Bills

Buffalo needs to replace aging Roger Saffold, and Ben Powers would be the ideal candidate. The offensive line remains one of the weak points of this team and the guard would be an added value on the line. With little money to spend, Buffalo will probably not be able to improve the team with an aggressive free agency on “premium” positions (CB, T…). Improving the team by focusing on an inside lineman position therefore seems consistent.

Other interesting names: Jawan Taylor (OT), Taylor Lewan (OT), Dalton Risner (G), Jason Kelce (C), Isaiah Wynn (OT), Kelvin Beachum (T), Nate Davis (G), Andre Dillard (T), Will Hernandez (L), Connor McGovern (C) …
