[Draft Sheets] Broderick Jones (OT), the high-speed heavyweight

Broderick Jones – Offensive tackle – 21 years old – (RS) Sophomore – Georgia

Height: 1m93

Weight: 141kg

Estimated Draft Position: Top 20

NFL Comparison: Dion Dawkins (Bills)

Double national champion with Georgia, Broderick Jones arrives with a sacred academic record among the pros. He evolved in the best conference in NCAA with excellent results. His athletic qualities are undeniable, but he remains a player to polish and could well fit into a team that has a very experienced left tackle to take over.

Strong points

– Speed
– Athletic qualities
– Potential
– Power

First of all, Broderick Jones is one of the best athletes of this cuvée in his position. It was measured at almost unreal speeds for a player of his size. While sheer speed isn’t the most important thing for an offensive tackle, it’s very useful on second- or third-curtain stumbles and blocks where Jones excels. His lateral mobility is excellent, he is able to mimic the movements of his opponent to oppose him. He has the necessary power to counter his opponents and can destabilize them on first contact, as his blows are so violent. He’s handed out plenty of pancakes at the college level and while it’ll be tougher in the NFL, it shows he’s developing the power needed for the job.

Weak points

– Inexperience
– Hand technique

Jones has only started 19 games at the University of Georgia, making him an inexperienced player. This can be seen in particular in his hand technique. He sometimes positions them too low and gives the opportunity to the pass rusher to grab his equipment to pass it. If they are violent, his blows are not always given in the right timing and in general, we could see an excess of aggressiveness during his course with the Bulldogs. This notably affects his balance in pass protection when he engages too quickly.

Possible destinations

Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs

In Illinois, we fell in the first round of the Draft, in particular to give a target to Justin Fields. It will be necessary to protect him well as well and Jones would fulfill this role perfectly. For their division rival, the Packers, David Bakhtiari’s injury worries are no longer to be ignored and Broderick Jones could take over. Since the departure of Anthony Castonzo, the Colts have not had a really good left tackle and seeing them come up from the top of the second round to get Jones would not be a surprise. Speaking of coming back, the Chiefs lost Orlando Brown Jr. and it might be a good idea to replace him by dropping a few Draft rounds to get back on track.
