Commanders: Sam Howell officially wins the quarterback position

Launched on the field at the very end of last season, Sam Howell will be able to continue to lead the Commanders’ attack.

Ron Rivera announced on Friday that the 22-year-old pitcher will be Washington’s starting quarterback for the start of the regular season.

For his only game played in 2022, Howell had completed 11 of 19 passes, with 169 yards, 1 touchdown and an interception. A few days ago, in preseason, he delivered a nice 9/12 for 77 yards and 1 touchdown against the Browns.

So he won the competition for the job against veteran Jacoby Brissett. Without too much surprise, Rivera and his staff surely preferred to give a chance to a youngster with room for improvement rather than betting on a 30-year-old player who is often solid but rarely exceptional.

As a reminder, the Commanders will begin their season on Sunday, September 10 with the reception of the Cardinals.
