Youth operation assumed in Brooklyn

After several years of piling up superstars and experienced players, the Brooklyn Nets decided to take a 180° turn last February with the departures of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. A turn that is confirmed this summer, and it is assumed.

“Overall, I think the general state of the team has changed”, admitted Jacque Vaughn. “There is no more Patty [Mills]more Seth [Curry]more Joe [Harris]more Yuta [Watanabe]… In general, the change mentioned at the end of the season is starting to be seen throughout the franchise”.

“We have players aged 24 to 27 who will be able to evolve together and define our identity”

Exit the thirties and make way for young talents, with a Bridges-Johnson-Claxton trio who aspire to find the playoffs again. “There is also Ben Simmons” recalls the Nets coach. “The four you mentioned – plus Spencer Dinwiddie, who is the eldest at 30 and has 20 points in the league… But with Cam Johnson, Mikal Bridges, Ben Simmons and Nic Claxton, we have players aged from 24 to 27 years old who will be able to evolve together and define our identity. A catchy identity is what we want. We want to be tireless teammates, tireless competitors. They will therefore have the opportunity to define this identity in the future”.

An identity that Royce O’Neale and Dorian Finney-Smith already embody, and they complete this quintet. Alongside this rotation of seven players, two young recruited veterans, Dennis Smith Jr (25) and Lonnie Walker (24), but also two 18-year-old rookies, Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead. Brooklyn had never selected such young players.

“We have two 18-year-olds who are now part of our program, and another second-round pick, Jalen Wilson, who is experienced and has won at a high level.” Vaughn concludes. “I can’t wait to see what he can do. But I think overall we have addressed the question of common progression, the ability to be good now and to optimize our squad for the future. »
