When Will Hardy asks his players how they want to defend

To disrupt their opponents, the Jazz sometimes use zone defense this season. This was again the case against the Pistons, in the second quarter, but unfortunately for Will Hardy, this choice did not pay off.

The Pistons indeed finished the quarter with 36 points scored at 15/22 in shooting including a 4/7 at 3-pts and thus returned to the game. “Overall our players communicated, made the effort, but we must pay tribute to the Pistons, they took some tough shots”notes the coach for the Deseret News.

The Jazz, who had only one point ahead at the break after having counted 13 in advance in the first act, was he going to continue with his zone defense? The coach asked himself the question and decided to submit it to his players.

“They were already talking about it among themselves”says Hardy for the official franchise website. “They answered ‘personal defence’ in less than a second. They are comfortable in this area and they say it is a good thing. Our intensity and our communication in defense were excellent in the second half. We took control physically. »

Faced with the reaction of the Utah players, those of Detroit will indeed drop a tone (as they had done against the Nets of Kevin Durant), finishing the third quarter with 25 points at 9/22 in shoot and only 1/6 to 3-pts.

The Jazz have clearly regained control of the game, Lauri Markkanen will do very badly with his outside shots and the troops of Will Hardy will impose themselves with authority. Also rejoicing to have been heard by their coach at halftime.

“It’s quite unique,” remarks Mike Conley. “There are coaches who make their decision and don’t ask anyone, except maybe their assistants. »
