When Grant Williams wanted to “trashtalk” Luka Doncic in training…

Very close to achieving a 7th consecutive triple-double with thirty points or more last night, Luka Doncic is simply averaging 36 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists since the All-Star Game!

And if he can be annoying with his continual complaints to the referees, who also prevent him from making the defensive withdrawal, or for his sulking side, the Slovenian is a real basketball factory. Especially when you heat it a little too much. This is what Grant Williams learned the hard way at the start of the season…

“I have a little story to tell you. About a player whose name I will not mention. It was Grant Williams [rires] »starts a joking Michael Finley, the assistant GM of the Mavs on a local radio. “One day, in training, he decided to go and heat Luka Doncic. Because he felt that Luka hadn't arrived ready to really train that day. So he started talking to him during a scrimmage. In attack, in defense. Until Luka decided enough was enough! »

Before being an assistant GM with the Mavs, Michael Finley saw others. Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki. But also Michael Jordan against whom he trained when he was young in Chicago.

“I swear, Luka made it 26-6 all by himself! You can ask other witnesses, I'm not exaggerating, he passed 26 points in a row. The complete range: 3-pointers, low post, floaters, the whole thing. Without saying a single word. All the guys on the staff were saying, on the bench, that we shouldn't wake the bear. We also had guests at training that day. They were swooning. The kid didn't miss anything. He released his entire repertoire in five minutes” concludes Michael Finley.

Grant Williams packed his bags at the trade deadline. At the time, ESPN partly explained this departure by the fact that it had “got on the nerves” quite a few people in Dallas. Perhaps he had especially hit the wrong ones…
