The Lakers finally win a game and find a smile

Lakers fans will have had to wait almost two weeks of competition to see it happen. But this first victory of the season is there and nicely unlocks the counter of the Californians against a solid formation of Denver (121-110).

While Denver got off to the best start in the first quarter (26-31), thanks in particular to the long-distance address of Michael Porter Jr. to start, the locals had to wait until the end of the third quarter- time to take control of the match, after turning a short header at the break (55-51).

The Nuggets had done a lot of damage to the Lakers by starting this third period with an impressive 8/11 from 3-pointers. But the Californians, yet the league’s worst team in the sector so far, have shown that they too can score from afar. With a very big pass from Lonnie Walker IV and 38 points scored in those twelve minutes, they started the last quarter with a three possession lead (93-85).

A lead that will never be called into question thanks to a defense well in place in important moments and less waste than usual in attack: only eight balls lost, half less than their average.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

The Anthony Davis-Nikola Jokic duel. The two interiors finish with a big double-double mirror after having fought a very high level duel in the racket. Anthony Davis made Nikola Jokic work a lot in defense and vice versa. The first, little successful in this sector since the start of the season, abandoned the 3-point shot to score halfway or near the circle, where he picked up a bunch of crumbs. The second scored a lot thanks to his work with his back to the circle but struggled to find the target behind the arc.

The Lakers 18-2 at the end of the third quarter. The turning point of the match, certainly. While the Nuggets kept lighting up from afar, the Lakers showed some response in the transition game. It all started with an untenable Lonnie Walker IV with his “jumpers” in first intention at half distance then at 3-points. Matt Ryan also got into it while Russell Westbrook was playing the distributors. Denver remained unresponsive to the intensity displayed by the locals and spectators of a Crypto.com Arena almost all standing. Even when Walker missed an alley-oop on the counterattack, you could see smiles on the faces of the Lakers, a symbol of positive collective energy.

TOPS/FLOPS

Russell Westbrook. If Lonnie Walker IV was the detonator, and LeBron James (author of a much better second period than the first) and Anthony Davis held their rank, we must highlight the best game of the season for the neo-6th man of the team. Despite a few small burrs, like a ball lost in the “money time” while the path of the dunk opened up to him, the leader always seemed to be in the right tempo. He multiplied the shifts to find his partners in the rhythm and forced very little. Less than two minutes from the end, he grabbed an important offensive rebound to go back to the circle in stride with his left hand. The audience enjoyed his celebrations. Its +18 +/- is eloquent.

The Nuggets bench. While Bruce Brown provided points and a bit of creation and Jeff Green signed a big baseline dunk, the Nuggets’ substitutes overall had a terribly negative impact on the score. The explanation is simple: most of them were present during this 18-2 conceded at the end of the third quarter. Result: three of them finished with a +/- ratio of at least -20 when they were in play…

GEORGE MIKAN’S JERSEY WITHDRAWN

The Hall of Famer’s family was on hand to celebrate the honor and witness the retirement of number 99. He is the 11th player to have his jersey retired by the Lakers, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West, Jamaal Wilkes and James Worthy.
