The Knicks collapse against the Hawks of a huge Dejounte Murray

Unbeaten until then at home, the Knicks were on track to win a 4th time in a row at Madison Square Garden. Thanks to a very good Julius Randle, they had taken an 11-point lead after a quarter, and even 20 at the start of the 2nd quarter (44-24). After a 3-pointer from RJ Barrett in the corner, the gap even reached 23 points (51-28). But there is still plenty of time, and even seven minutes before halftime. Clumsy until then, Trae Young wakes up, Dejounte Murray steals ball after ball, and the Hawks sign a 29-12 to return to -8 at the break (65-57).

This cut does not break the rhythm of the Hawks who sign a 12-0 to attack the 3rd quarter. Touched in the eye, Young gave way to Aaron Holiday, who immediately planted a 3-pointer. But the Knicks wake up, and they equalize (71-71). It’s a playoff game, and in Young’s absence, Murray is running the show for the Hawks. In its wake, Atlanta signed a new 12-0, and at the start of the last quarter, Atlanta took a 14-point lead (89-75).

This time, the Hawks do not let go, and Murray even drives the nail to 3-pointers. The gap flirts with 20 points (107-88), and finally Atlanta wins 112-99 to inflict the Knicks their first loss at home.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

Trae Young’s injury. Hit in the eye in the 3rd quarter on a shock with Julius Randle, Trae Young came back into play in the last quarter with protective glasses. He only scored 17 points at 32%, but he distributed 7 assists, and his presence is reassuring in the money time when the Knicks had returned to -10.

The Knicks’ lack of aggression. Clearly in the lead after 15 minutes, the Knicks dozed off…and there’s one number that doesn’t lie. Just three interceptions for New York. Opposite, Murray makes six all by himself.

– The bad choices of Tom Thibodeau. Twice, the Knicks coach wanted to trust his holders, and twice, Atlanta punished him. In the 2nd quarter, it was the bench that made the difference to give them a 23-point lead. Instead of leaving his substitutes, he puts his incumbents into play, and Atlanta benefits from it. Same error at the start of the 3rd quarter. The starters are out of it, and he keeps them on the field.

TOPS & FLOPS

Dejounte Murray. Career record for the former Spurs point guard with 36 points. Trae Young clumsy then injured, he was the leader of attack, and he also added 9 assists, 4 rebounds and 6 steals.

John Collins. Admittedly, he finished 4 out of 10 on shots but the Hawks strong winger was good in defense, and his aggressiveness was good, especially in the 3rd quarter. Manhandled by Randle in the 1st quarter, he then took over.

Immanuel Quickley. We do not understand why Thibodeau did not leave on the field… The substitute point guard will seek 16 rebounds and his speed was good for the Knicks. When he comes out in the 2nd quarter, there are 17 points ahead for New York. When he returns at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Hawks lead by six points…

⛔️ Evan Fournier. New counter-performance from the Frenchman whose role is increasingly vague in attack. And as in defense, he is in difficulty, it gives a negative evaluation and the worst +/- of his team: -20!
