The Basketball Hall of Fame ready to welcome Tony Parker!

Tony Parker hasn’t delivered his speech yet, but he already has the orange jacket and the ring that symbolizes his entry into the Basketball Hall of Fame, at the famous Hall Of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was his brothers, TJ and Pierre, but also Boris Diaw and Ronny Turiaf who gave him Friday evening. In the room, his children, his partner and his lifelong friends. Quadruple NBA champion, MVP of the Finals and six-time All-Star during his career, TP will become the first Frenchman to enter the hall of fame.

“Even in my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined one day entering the Hall of Fame” he confided a week ago. “At the time, it was impossible, there were no European leaders who had succeeded in the NBA and there were just no Europeans. Being drafted was already quite a thing. So me, I dreamed of the NBA and of becoming the first European leader to succeed in the NBA, but from there to tell myself that I would win four titles, from there to tell myself that I would become the first European MVP of the Finals or from there to talk of Hall of Fame… It’s just crazy. »

By his side, Gregg Popovich, his coach and mentor, incidentally five-time NBA champion and the most successful coach in regular season history, still active. But also Dwyane Wade (three-time NBA champion, Finals MVP), Dirk Nowitzki (NBA champion, MVP and Finals MVP) and his best enemy and former teammate Paul Gasol (double NBA champion, Rookie of the year) or even Becky Hammon (six-time All-Star, four-time All-WNBA Team member), first female NBA assistant. At Spurs of course.

Tony Parker, symbol of a very Spurs and European 2023 vintage

The 2023 vintage of Hall of Fame is exceptional, and Parker belongs among the legends of the sport, in “another galaxy. »

“When you just look at the Spurs, there are 10 jerseys retired and there are only 4 in the Hall of Fame” he recalled. So that’s where you see it. They are doing a split in the United States and I feel like you are entering another galaxy, because there are very, very few players who enter the Hall of Fame. I feel the pressure and I’m very nostalgic, because I write my speech and I watch games, it’s weird. However, I had big things like Legion of Honor or National Order of Merit, but the Hall of Fame… I can compare it to my meeting with [Barack] Obama at the White House. The kind of stuff where you don’t show off too much and where you have to be ready. »

At his side, this evening, to deliver his speech: Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan. With TP, they form, between them, the most victorious trio in history with each more than 70% of victories in the regular season, and 126 successes together in the playoffs. This August 12, the whole Spurs family is in the spotlight, and it is TP, as if on a pitch, who will bring them together, under the gaze of Gregg Popovich, who becomes immortal the same evening.

It’s a relationship that will always be very, very special, it’s like a second father concludes Tony Parker. ” I came to San Antonio so young, at 19, and he took me under his wing. We will even say that he took a risk because, at the time, giving the ball to a European leader when your superstar, Tim Duncan, didn’t tell me about my whole rookie year, it’s risky. I’m the player he’s had the hardest time with at Spurs but, at the same time, we’ve achieved so many things together… It’s almost funny to enter the Hall of Fame together, we could have chosen anyone what a year for him. Plus, there will also be Becky Hammon, who’s like a big sister, so it’s just amazing to be back at the same time as them. »
