Television | LeBron James and Drake sued by former NBA players union president

It had been a long time since the name of Billy Hunter had been circulating in the NBA world. The former president of the players’ union had been fired and his mandate (1996-2013) had been tarnished by questionable practices.

A few years after this episode, here he is again in a legal case. This time around, he’s accusing LeBron James, along with rappers Drake and Future, of stealing an intellectual priority from him. and according to the New York Posthe claims in particular 10 million dollars in damages!

Why ? The basketball player and the two artists have produced a documentary, “Black Ice”, about a hockey league reserved for blacks at the beginning of the 20th century, which will be screened at the Toronto International Festival on September 10.

As is often the case with documentaries, LeBron James and company took a book on the subject as a reference. As it happens, Black Ice: The Lost History of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, 1895 to 1925by George and Darril Fosty.

But Billy Hunter claims he bought the intellectual rights to the subject in 2019 after paying the authors of the book $265,000. Clearly, as soon as a film comes out on this hockey league, you have to go through the former leader of the players’ union. What LeBron James didn’t do. Additionally, Billy Hunter has also introduced the names of the perpetrators in his lawsuit since he feels they failed to honor their agreement with him.

George and Darril Fosty argue for their part that they did not violate the agreement with Billy Hunter because the film produced by LeBron James is not a “work of fiction”, but a documentary. Obviously, Billy Hunter refutes this argument, considering it to be in bad faith. LeBron James and Drake have not yet commented on this case.
