Stanley Johnson, unlikely hero of the end of the game against the Jazz | NBA

After three defeats in a row, including one very heavy on the floor of the Nuggets, the Lakers wanted to start again at home. It’s done with a victory against a Jazz team who knows there a fifth setback in six games.

Advantage Los Angeles in the first period. The Lakers took advantage of the clumsiness of the Jazz in its transmissions (eight balls lost in the first quarter alone) to maintain a short lead. While Rudy Gobert was having trouble grabbing the leather in the paint, Utah was able to rely on Mike Conley’s long-distance skill, mostly at the head of the racket.

The leader was one of the few to celebrate in this sector after a first period ended with only 35% overall success. Playing fairer overall, with a LeBron James who varied the finishing and distribution sequences, the Californians counted up to 11 points before turning a short header at the break (52-46).

The third quarter was much more complicated for the locals. Rather discreet so far, Donovan Mitchell had the good idea to get closer to the circle. With him and a few award-winning baskets from Joe Ingles, the Jazz were able to chain several “runs” including a 9-0 at the end of the period, marked by several sequences of bad basketball. With 32 points scored in this quarter, Utah was back in front (72-78).

But the tide turned again in the following minutes. Confronted once again with the “small ball”, Utah was content to water at 3-pointers, without ever looking for Rudy Gobert under the circle despite his size advantage, but the Frenchman also had all the trouble in the world to control Stanley Johnson , which largely contributed to the 13-0 past by the Lakers (87-83). The visitors regained some offensive lucidity at the end but the two possessions in favor of the locals held until the end.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

The clumsiness of Jazz. Fortunately, the visitors were on the free throw line, because for the rest… With barely 37% success overall, including 26% behind the 3-point line, the Jazz missed out on his address level match. Quin Snyder’s men, however, did not want to change strategy along the way by trying to get closer to the circle or feed Rudy Gobert into the racket, where they scored only 36 points. Among the big clumsy, we can cite Donovan Mitchell, Jordan Clarkson and Rudy Gay who have accumulated an incredible… 1/22 behind the arc.

The big finish of the Lakers. In difficulty in the third quarter, the Californians managed to react in the final period thanks to the activity of their replacements who were able to get the local public on board with them. Serious in defense, they did not suffer from their size deficit in this “small ball” which still disturbs Utah as much, Dwight Howard not having been used at all in this period to fight against Rudy Gobert.

TOPS/FLOPS

Stanley Johnson. The man of the fourth quarter! Almost transparent before, the winger completely changed the course of the game with his circle attacks which made it possible to trigger a 17-4 in favor of the Lakers. After a missed shot by LeBron James, it was he again who grabbed the offensive rebound to release Avery Bradley at 3-point in the “money time”. Rudy Gobert suffered a lot in mobility against him.

Bojan Bogdanovic and Jordan Clarkson. Best Symbols of Jazz Awkwardness. Neither of them managed to get into their match. On the same sequence, the first was also countered by Dwight Howard, before being sanctioned by a ball range… The second forced a lot, both near the circle and further away. If Bogdanovic has at least brought a little creation, the former Lakers player has been less useful.

RUSSELL WESTBROOK CRUSHES RUDY GOBERT

The action of the evening obviously. While he could have been whistled for an offensive foul, for his left arm at the level of the Frenchman’s neck, the Lakers point guard crushed everything on this action and unloaded his frustration in the second quarter. However, he celebrated his dunk a little too much in the direction of the pivot after his action, to the point of being penalized by a technical fault on the part of the referees…
