Netflix is preparing a documentary on the legend Bill Russell | NBA

A major figure in the Great League, with his eleven NBA titles won with the legendary Celtics of the 1960s, his five MVP titles and his twelve All-Star caps, Bill Russell holds a number of records and his aura is even greater when we know that he was the first black coach in American team sport.

But the Boston legend had still not been entitled to his documentary which would look back on his incredible career, and his journey in general. This failure seems to be on the way to being resolved because Russell should finally be the subject of a documentary produced by Netflix.

Still untitled and without a release date, this documentary aims to be “the ultimate biographical documentary” on one of the icons of American sport, but also worldwide. After the huge success of The Last Dance which put Jordan back in the limelight at the start of the pandemic, and the HBO series which should be released soon to revive the Showtime Lakers team, even this other project around George Gervin, Russell will therefore also to be honoured, and particularly from the angle of his civic activities in favor of the American black population.

Olympic gold, double NCAA champion, 11 NBA titles as players, 2 titles as a coach…

While he should miss All Star Weekend for the first time in a very long time (because of the pandemic), Russell will for once participate in exclusive interviews ahead of this documentary, in addition to opening some of his personal archives to enrich it further.

“From very humble beginnings, Russell has led each of his basketball teams to championship titles – with two California high school championship titles, back-to-back NCAA titles, a gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and 11 NBA titles during his 13 season career with the Boston Celtics (the last two as the first black coach in NBA history, while still playing for the Celtics). Bill’s story is intrinsically and irrevocably tied to the 75-year-long history of the NBA, and the past eight decades of American history. “

What we already know is that the documentary will be produced by Sam Pollard, who notably worked on MLK / FBI or Citizen Ashe. On this project, Pollard will be accompanied by a team of producers made up of Larry Gordon (Field of Dreams, Die Hard), Ross Greenburg (Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals) and Mike Richardson (Hellboy).
