Luka Doncic has the last word against the Clippers

Mavericks in demonstration, a big “comeback” from the Clippers before a very undecided final. This meeting had all the ingredients to end in a great match. Finally, it is Luka Doncic and the Mavs who have the last word (103-101) against the Clippers back-to-back.

Robert Covington could bite his fingers. He failed to grab the leather, after a deliberately missed throw by Nicolas Batum, to offer his team one last possession. With two points behind and a handful of seconds to play, Los Angeles still had every chance. The visitors had come from very far away.

Ten minutes from the end, on a basket from Paul George, they had equalized (70-70). In a fourth quarter marked by numerous whistles, and the disputes that go with it, the Californians thought of going after their hold-up by taking a three-point lead on an action by John Wall (79-82 ).

It was without counting on the “role players” opposite, Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie and especially Reggie Bullock in the last moments who made pay for each double take of Luka Doncic, at the origin of the shifts and extra passes. Bullock sent two missiles in a row two minutes from the end (99-93) but a Nicolas Batum on another planet answered him with his seventh award-winning shot!

This ” 3&D gamer contest as the local commentator described it was eventually refereed by Luka Doncic. 30 seconds from time, on the verge of the lost ball, the Slovenian converted a very complicated shot from behind the arc despite an outstretched arm from the Frenchman who could only smile yellow.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

The Mavs in a dream. This may not be what Jason Kidd will remember from the game, but his team played their basketball in the first period (54-32), especially in the first quarter (30-15). A solid defense, simple offensive principles with fixation and distribution to find open shots… With, in a large majority of cases, Luka Doncic at the origin of the actions which allowed Dallas to take up to 25 points in advance in the second quarter.

The Clippers’ response. Returning to the locker room all sheepish with more than 20 points behind, the visitors had the merit of getting back into it after the break despite the fatigue linked to a second night of “back-to-back”. They could count on the address in the small perimeter of an impeccable Marcus Morris, without forgetting the alarm clock of John Wall. A relatively quick “comeback” since nine minutes after the break, they were only one possession behind (63-60).

The Clippers’ ball losses. This is one of the big statistical discrepancies in this game. The difference was seen in the last quarter when Paul George, also trapped for a good part of the evening, had trouble finding his teammates after the two-man. He even sent a ball into the stands, failing to touch the referee. Note the important role of Dwight Powell in defense on these sequences, “PG” having lost almost as many balls (10) as the entire opposing team (12).

TOPS/FLOPS

Luka Doncic. Behind the Mavs’ huge start to the game, he had a more mixed second half. In the last quarter, he played intelligently against the two-man strikes, to generate the shifts. Until this miracle shot 30 seconds from the end. On arrival, a sixth double-double this season and an eleventh game, already, at 30 points or more.

Nicholas Batum. What an eruption from the Frenchman! He started his 3-point festival in the second quarter, when his team was struggling in attack, still from the same area at 45° to the left. Then he sent four new award-winning shots in the last quarter to make the Clippers dream. The handyman finishes with a perfect 7/7 from a distance.

John Wall. Completely transparent in the first period, the replacement point guard brought a big boost to the Clippers in the second. With his speed and the quality of his shot at mid-range, he notably scored 10 points in the third quarter, to contribute to the return of his team.

Tim Hardaway Jr.. Apart from the last three seconds, where he dribbled past Paul George to avoid being fouled by the Clippers, the back was almost invisible. In attack especially, since he did not return the slightest shot or scored a point.

Norman Powell. Similar observation to Tim Hardaway Jr. for the Clippers replacement who was terribly lacking in skill.
