Ian Mahinmi also determined to move the Basketball Africa League forward

Like Joakim Noah, Ian Mahinimi saw his NBA career come to an end in the Orlando “bubble” after a turbulent 2019/20 season under the colors of Washington. Present in Florida, the pivot actually played his last game at the end of February 2020, just before the season was put on hold.

For him too, post-career quickly coincided with supporting BAL’s first steps as an investor (to become a minority shareholder in NBA Africa) alongside Barack Obama, actor Forest Whitaker and even former NBA players Dikembe Mutombo, Luol Deng and therefore Joakim Noah.

“For me, this is really the next chapter. I feel like everything I’ve done has led me to this.”, did he declare from Dakar, where he attends the third edition of the BAL.

If Ian Mahinmi is attentive to the evolution of the event, it is because he also worked for the development of basketball in Africa, particularly in Benin, the country of his father, where he returned each year with his foundation. “I AM”, thus accompanying the best potential to join the United States or France.

The BAL is launched…

Before going to Dakar, he also made a detour via Cotonou to continue promoting the Basketball Africa League, explaining that the objective was to raise the local level upwards, each team having the obligation to have at least 8 players from his country.

As for the enthusiasm, on and around the grounds, around this league which is still in its infancy, Ian Mahinmi is not worried.

“At the local level, the game is now popular. The game is practiced. And of course, basketball isn’t just a game. It’s a whole way of life. Game goes with music, music goes with swag, clothes, shoes, sneakers. It’s as if an entire ecosystem had awakened. For me, it’s only a matter of time. This league has changed the whole landscape and the way basketball is viewed on the continent.”
