Death of Lusia Harris, the only woman drafted in the NBA | NBA

Like Ann Meyers, the first player in history to sign with an NBA franchise, Lucia Harris was a pioneer.

Died Tuesday at the age of 66 in Mississippi, this former international, considered one of the best players in college basketball, will go down in history as the only player to have been drafted in the NBA. It was 1977, and at the time, the New Orleans Jazz had selected her in the 137th position, in the 7th round.

Olympic champion in 1976 with the United States, alongside Ann Meyers, she had refused to perform a trial with the Jazz. We will learn later that it was because she was pregnant.

Fifteen years later, Lusia Harris confirms her status as a pioneer by becoming the first black to enter the Hall Of Fame. A unique journey and career that will be told in a short film, “The Queen of Basketball”, released in 2021.
