Celtics overthrow Pelicans to open ‘MLK Day’ | NBA

Deprived of the Smart-Williams tandem and in great difficulty in the first half, the Celtics of the Schroder-Brown-Tatum trio (23, 23 and 27 points) provided the essentials against the Pelicans in order to regain a positive balance on the evening of the MLK Day, a first since December 8th.

The Pelicans, however, cooled the TD Garden entry by placing a 17-6 with the help of the Graham-Ingram-Valanciunas trio. Grant Williams restarted with two 3-point missiles and a dunk on the counterattack (14-17), but the C’s dived again, conceding a 12-2 scored by the dunk of Brandon Ingram and the two distant missiles by Nickeil Alexander-Walker to end the first act (18-29).

Boston continued to sink, 3-pointers from Jonas Valanciunas and Devonte ‘Graham contributing to salt the score (24-42). Then the hour of the burst finally arrived, with a 15-4 to conclude the first half and return to a more reasonable gap, in particular thanks to the 3-points of the Schroder-Brown-Horford trio (39-46).

Jaylen Brow and Jayson Tatum took matters into their own hands after returning from the locker room in an attempt to finally put the Celtics ahead for the first time in the game. Despite strong resistance from Jonas Valanciunas’ teammates, the C’s achieved their goal following a “spin move” by Jayson Tatum on the Lithuanian, which ended with a lay-up then a 3-pointer in stride signed Dennis Schroder (69 -67).

A brand new game started in the last quarter, with Jayson Tatum on his way which propelled the Celtics to victory with two baskets in a row including a 2 + 1, then a big dunk on the counterattack (80- 71). The winger then found Aaron Nesmith in transition for another furious dunk, with the foul as a bonus, before adding two throws to place Boston at +11 with 7 minutes remaining (87-76). Dennis Schroder finished the job diligently, giving Boston a valuable victory (104-92).

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

– Reaction Celtics. Ime Udoka’s men still had to go through difficult times before finding the key to the Pelicans defense. There was this complicated start, the 12-2 at the end of the first quarter, a gap that climbed to -18, until this burst of pride at the end of the first half and a second half completely different, with more aggressiveness in defense and accuracy in attack. It passes for this time against the Pelicans.

– A steamroller after the break. Terribly borrowed at the start of the game, the Celtics had scored only 24 points four minutes from halftime. The reaction of Ime Udoka’s troops to this series of 3-pointers before the break put Boston back on the right track, and the locals finally found the solution at the very end of the third quarter. The last act then took on the appearance of a demonstration, the gap having then risen to +17 two minutes from the end!

TOPS/FLOPS

Jayson Tatum. His first half was cause for concern, but the winger was able to reverse the trend after the break by snapping 21 of his 27 points. Active in the Celtics’ recovery operation alongside Jaylen Brown, he then caught fire to definitively put the Pelicans’ head under water.

✅Dennis Schroder. The point guard was the X factor of the game. In the absence of Marcus Smart, the German international was also present in the important moments, and offered the basket which put Boston in front for the first time in the match, at the very end of the third quarter. time, from a 3-pointer full of composure. He too finished very strong to seal the stunning victory for his team and finish with 23 points and 9 assists.

✅Jonas Valanciunas. The Lithuanian pivot has held its rank since it has been a permanent threat to the Celtics racket for three quarters. Not far from the double-double at half-time, Jonas Valanciunas fought after the break to delay the deadline before letting go in the face of repeated attacks from the C’s. He finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists in 33 minutes.

Brandon Ingram. The Pelicans star had pulled out the watering can, finishing 6/19 on shot. Too bad because he also cracked remarkable passages in the first half before completely shutting down afterwards, like his team. Upon arrival, his 15 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists were clearly not enough.
