Brittney Griner turned away the WNBA courts

Brittney Griner played again for the very first time since returning from Russia, in a pre-season home game against the Los Angeles Sparks. The basketball player received a “standing ovation” when her name was announced during the team presentation. Despite the loss (90-71), she scored 10 points at 2/5 shooting in 17 minutes.

“I didn’t think I would be sitting here” reacted Brittney Griner. “I also didn’t think I would play again so quickly. Even coming back, I had no idea how it was going to be. I’m grateful to be here right now. I wouldn’t take a day like this for granted, but there was a lot to take in.”.

Lacking benchmarks, its performance was generally mixed. She even seemed lost on the field at times, which is quite normal when you experience such a lack of activity for many months.

Moved during the national anthem

As a reminder, in 2021, during her last season played in the WNBA, Brittney Griner averaged 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.9 against at 57.5% shooting success!

“Honestly, I defended very badly today” confessed Brittney Griner. “It was my first game since my return, it’s pre-season. The first regular season game in Los Angeles will be totally different. The coach keeps telling me not to be too hard on myself, but it’s hard. I was happy with some of my shots. When it comes to defense, I have to be better.”.

The player also explained that she felt a lot of emotions during the national anthem before the match. An emotion she had never felt in the WNBA before her incarceration in Russia.

“Hearing the national anthem, I really felt something different” concluded Brittney Griner. “It’s like when you go to the Olympics, you’re there, about to receive the gold medal, the flags are hoisted and the anthem is played, it’s just different… Being here today… It means a lot”.
