AmeriCup: Team USA stopped by… the rain!

The Americans were keen to redeem themselves against Venezuela after losing their opening match against Mexico (73-67). Norris Cole’s teammates had also quickly taken off in order to facilitate the task, until leading 48-21 after twenty minutes of play.

But that was without counting on the heavy rains that swept through the Recife region this weekend, to the point of breaking through the roof of the Geraldo Magalhães Sports Gymnasium (better known as Geraldao Arena). As the safety of the players was no longer ensured due to the slippery parquet, the match could not be resumed.

Match postponed to Tuesday

FIBA’s management was not exemplary as both teams had to wait several hours before the postponement of the match to a later date is officially recorded. Worse still, two other matches of the competition (Dominican Republic – Virgin Islands and Argentina – Puerto Rico) were able to be held without problems in the same venue later in the day!

As for the end of the meeting between Team USA and Venezuela, it was finally set for Tuesday, and for good reason, the two teams are playing again today, against Mexico for Venezuela and Panama for the Americans. Fortunately, the quarter-finals will not take place until Thursday.
