After two months of cancer treatment, Dave Joerger returns to the Sixers bench | NBA

In mid-November, Dave Joerger took a step back from the Sixers and the NBA. When he had been discovered to have cancer which affected “his head and his neck”the first assistant of Doc Rivers was going to know several weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions and could logically no longer work.

In Philadelphia, everyone was obviously very worried, but Dave Joerger has been back with the team for the past few days, and Doc Rivers has confirmed that he will now be back on the bench full time!

“He’s been back for two games and he’s been through so much” explained the “head coach” of the franchise. “More than anyone imagines and the fact that he can coach this year is a real miracle. Six weeks ago I said it was impossible for him to come back this season and the fact that he is there is great. At the shootaround, he was going to the edge of the pitch and the guys were like, ‘Hey, but that’s Dave Joerger?’ So yeah, it was cool to see the reaction of the players to his return. It was really nice. “

For Doc Rivers, it’s an illustration of the collective chemistry of this group, but also a good way for the Sixers to put into perspective certain problems that could spoil the team’s season.

“For our young people, he does not imagine that these things can happen. Obviously, we don’t want it, but it’s a reminder of reality, of the fact that we live in the real world, and not just the NBA bubble.

As for Dave Joerger, he is simply happy to return to his usual daily life.

“Words cannot describe how grateful I am to be back with the team. The last few months have been some of the toughest of my life, but I’m lucky to have the support of Josh Harris, David Blitzer, Doc Rivers, Daryl Morey, Elton Brand and the entire 76ers organization. Their support, along with that of my wife Kimberly and my family, has been unwavering. I might not be here today if not for the incredible medical team at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. For now, I’m excited about the trajectory of this team and look forward to helping our group achieve the ultimate goal of the NBA title. “
