Steady progress throughout his first two seasons in the league, Coby White stalled last season. Embarrassed from the “training camp” by a serious shoulder injury, then left behind in the hierarchy on his position by newcomers Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso and Ayo Dosunmu, the former North Carolina has never really succeeded in find her momentum. On arrival, a disappointing third season.
So much so that his future was almost written far from “Windy City”, with his name regularly included in transfer rumors in recent months. To make matters worse, veteran Goran Dragic and rookie Dalen Terry joined the ranks of the Chicago franchise on the 1/2 positions.
A “normal” first summer to get off to a good start
Finally retained after an uncertain summer, Coby White took advantage of his first “real” off-season to work hard and regain value in the eyes of his club. One year from the end of his rookie contract…
” This summer has been very important to me. My first off-season was during the Covid-19 pandemic, my second was under the sign of recovery since I injured my shoulder » he reminds. ” So it was a nice feeling to just come back to the gym, healthy, to work. I hadn’t been able to do that since college. »
The 7th choice of the 2019 Draft adds that he insisted a lot on physical strengthening, after his injury last year which completely ruined his season.
” I had a good summer, very studious. I now hope that my efforts will be reflected on the pitch this season. I worked a lot physically. It was hard to live with being injured in camp last season. So I put all the chances on my side to seize my opportunity if it arises. »
And this one actually showed up in preseason. After a shortened first game against the Pelicans due to leg pain, Coby White then fully seized his chance to get back into his coach’s rotation: 15 points (5/7), 2 rebounds and 3 assists against Denver; 7 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists against Toronto and 15 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists against Milwaukee.
Something to calmly approach his fourth season, that of the rebound on a personal basis, but above all the one that could determine whether his future is in Chicago or elsewhere, since he is eligible for a contract extension…
