Yankees drop Game 1 against Astros

As part of the All-American Championship Series, the Astros were a better team on paper. They have better pitchers, rest, they’ve been eating the Yankees all year and they have playoff experience.

That didn’t stop me from picking the Yankees in six because I believe the desire to avenge the 2017 and 2019 playoffs, when the Astros cheated, is big…but good.

Yesterday, the Houston Astros clearly demonstrated that they are a great baseball machine (even if they are hated due to the scandal) and that they are, right now, the team to beat in the playoffs in a square. of aces which also includes the Padres and the Phillies.

The Astros haven’t lost in the playoffs yet this year, actually.

The club won 4-2 against the Yankees who offered good opposition but lacked resources. Clark Schmidt, who came to relieve Jameson Taillon, notably ran out of gas and he allowed two earned runs in one inning of work. It made the difference, in the end…and Aaron Boone made another questionable decision.

What I remember is that Justin Verlander threw a lot when he left – especially in the first three innings, where he shot 66 and finally gave the Yankees a lead against his club this year – against the Bombers, but limited the damage.

He finally made 103 shots in six innings of work and started passing guys in the mitt. In fact, no less than 11 guys bit the dust against the great Verlander.

In the end, 17 batters were struck out by the Yankees against only two for Houston. The gap of 15 is a playoff record.

And that’s not the fault of Aaron Judge (only one K yesterday) and Giancarlo Stanton (zero K), but rather guys like Matt Carpenter (4) and Josh Donaldson (3).

Note that in the Yankees’ outfield, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton made fine defensive plays while Harrison Bader hit his fourth homer in six playoff games. It’s the world upside down.

Among the Astros, Yuli Gurriel and Chas McCormick notably hit the long ball, but we must remember the performance of Jeremy Pena.

The shortstop, who played heroes in the 18-inning game against Seattle last weekend, hit three of the Astros’ seven hits. That’s three more hits than Jose Altuve since the start of the playoffs.

And we’re talking about three more than one base hits, including a home run. The last rookie to hit three more than one base hits in MLB in the playoffs? A certain Carlos Correa.

Pena, with his performance and his charisma, manages more and more to make people forget Carlos Correa, the club’s former shortstop player.

Tonight, only the clubs of the American will be in action since the Padres and the Phillies, who are tied in their series, will have rest.

At 7:37 p.m., Luis Severino and Framber Valdez will face off in Texas.

  • Josh Reddick: Retirement is imminent.
  • Is he still in Toronto? I like this.
