What future for Gabriel Moreno in Toronto?

Gabriel Moreno is the Blue Jays’ best prospect. The receiver has a great talent and he managed to do well. However, he was sent downstairs for lack of space at the top.

He was recalled on September 7th… but since then he hardly ever plays. He had one start and he had just five batting chances.

Obviously, for a young person, this is not ideal. There may be conditions (maybe the Jays wanted to limit his playing time at the end of the season due to his state of health, for example) explaining his recall to warm up the bench, but I do not know them .

In the short term, as I explained this morning, I don’t necessarily see him being part of the playoff roster. There are too many players to place before him.

But obviously, we know that for this year, he is not exactly the player on whom the Blue Jays are based. The recipe (Danny Jansen + Alejandro Kirk) works well and we can understand John Schneider not wanting to break it.

In the meantime, Moreno is practicing in other positions. What does that mean? Who knows.

But for 2023, what awaits him?

We know that this winter, the leaders of the Blue Jays will have to make a decision because Moreno will eventually have to play in Toronto.

We always thought that by virtue of his potential, his place in 2023 was certain and that one of the other receivers was going to jump to make room. But right now, I’m having a hard time seeing who would leave.

Jansen is a defensive master and the club loves him. He is showing more and more consistency offensively speaking and he brings a touch of young veteran behind the plate.

Kirk was the All-Star starter, he’s a crowd favorite, his batting is central to the offensive lineup, and he’s the personal receiver (and good friend) of the club’s best pitcher, either. Alek Manoah. That counts in the equation, in my eyes.

Is it utopian to believe that the Blue Jays will trade one of the two receivers to make room for Moreno? It’s hard to say.

But with an aspiring club’s confidence in its two established receivers, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Moreno was used as bait to get a BIG fish elsewhere in MLB.

I’m not sure that it is indeed Moreno who will be traded, of course … and we should not draw conclusions on the simple basis of a month of September when Toronto is in the race for the playoffs. That said, reflection can still take place, right?
