The Red Sox are in the race for the services of JD Martinez

JD Martinez’s stint with the Red Sox has been a very good one. Signed as a free agent ahead of the 2018 season, Martinez was a crucial part of the team’s success in winning the World Series in his freshman year in Boston and he’s been a great hitter overall.

That said, his contract ended in the last few weeks and he is currently free as the air. And now that the big names are nearly all signed, the market for guys like Martinez will start to heat up.

And according to Jon Heyman, there is one team in particular that has shown interest in Martinez: the Red Sox.

After letting Xander Bogaerts go, the Red Sox would therefore try to bring back another well-known face from recent years in Martinez. At 35, he’s not exactly a youth anymore, but we can do a lot worse than him as a designated hitter.

And besides, we know what we have in Martinez, who has been in town for a few years already.

Aside from 2020, Martinez has been a All Star each of his five years in Boston. He seems to have lost a lot of his power, but he’s still racking up doubles and hits at a hellish rate and he’ll no doubt be able to help a club looking for offensive stability.

And let’s say of the teams that need a good designated hitter, there’s more than one.

In short, it will clearly be a file to follow, but the Red Sox seem to have interest in bringing Martinez back to town. Remains to be seen if that will materialize in a signing in Boston or a move for the veteran.

  • Billy Hamilton has signed a minors contract with the White Sox.
  • Andrew Benintendi obviously wanted to leave New York.
