The Rays are a small market club. It is a club which, quite regularly, exchanges its stars so as not to have to pay too much for them.
That said, sometimes the club has surprises in store for us. For instance? By giving $25 million a year to Tyler Glasnow for the 2024 season. By being in the Freddie Freeman derby.
And there, the club would have another surprise in mind.
According to reports, the Rays are interested in signing outfielder and free agent Brandon Nimmo this winter.
Recall that the Rays cut ties with Kevin Kiermaier, but that Jose Siri did an admirable job in center field in 2022.
And with Randy Arozarena and Manuel Margot, I didn’t necessarily see the Tampa club being in the running for an outfielder worth more than $100 million.
That said, when a guy like him is available, obviously there are plenty of clubs vying for his services.
But I wonder to what extent Nimmo, who also received a qualifying offer this winter, is a logical target for the Rays. This will be to follow.
Remember that the Blue Jays and the Mets are possibly the two most aggressive teams to get their hands on his services. Do the Rays want to thwart a division rival on the case?
It could be, yes.
