The deadline for the replacement of the roof of the Olympic Stadium postponed again

As we learned today from Radio-Canada via a report by Romain Schué, we will still have to wait to replace the roof of the Olympic Stadium. The replacement, which was scheduled for 2024, has been moved to an unknown date.

Remember that reports indicate that the roof must be changed to meet several safety standards, which compromises the holding of events each time. So we have a sports stadium that we can hardly use for sporting events, but which is used to vaccinate people or to welcome refugees.

Unacceptable

The roof problems at the Olympic Stadium are not new. In fact, they date from 1999, when the canvas had torn a few days before the launch of the Montreal Auto Show. I still striking images in mind. We are therefore talking about 23 years. The different governments have succeeded since, but none of them has been able to solve the problem in, yes, yes, 23 years. The citizen of Montreal and Quebec in me finds this embarrassing, allow me the euphemism here. I remain polite, but frankly, the joke has gone on long enough.

Here is an excerpt from Romain Schué’s article in his article today which sums up the situation perfectly.

“23 years old, the current canvas has suffered more than 16,300 tears, according to the latest data from the Olympic Park. No event can be held in this enclosure, for security reasons, if the weather forecast predicts more than three centimeters of snow or more than three millimeters of sleet, according to the rules in force.

You can not make that up. It makes me angry, because I bought tickets for tomorrow’s game between the late Impact (CF Montreal) and Santos Laguna and I don’t even think the game will be played in relation to the weather conditions.

How can a great people like the people of Quebec tolerate such an absurd situation? Whether we like it or not, the Olympic Stadium is our Stade de France, our Wembley Stadium or even our Azteca Stadium and it is a burden more than anything else.

I have always been a great defender of the Olympic Stadium. Through this blog, I wrote several articles promoting him, including one in 2019 related to a private visit at the dawn of the Toronto Blue Jays games against the Milwaukee Brewers. On the other hand, during this visit, I also remember having learned that the model of bulbs was discontinued and that therefore, the lighting of the stadium went out slowly. I also remember a roof that sank on my head. It’s time to give our stadium some love and make it a source of pride again.

It hurts as a sports fan, because it’s always us who pay the price. When it’s art and culture, there are no problemsmillions of dollars are flowing, as in the case of the Montreal Symphony House or the financing of libraries, in particular. The same goes for transportation, with funding so that every street in Montreal has a bike path or that the Eastern REMwhich has become almost useless post-pandemic and which will pass 15 meters from the houses on rue Dubuisson, is being built.

But the maintenance of the stadium, to host sporting events, no, not that!
