In the last few days, the hope of seeing Jacob deGrom again with the Mets has gained importance. Why? Because Rangers aren’t too keen on their chances of signing him at the moment.
Inevitably, this opens the door a bit to the Mets, a club that needs pitchers.
Yes, there are clubs like the Phillies or the Rays who are in the picture, but in the end, if I had to bet on his next destination, I would say that he will return to New York.
Why? Because Steve Cohen is here.
The big-money Mets owner knows he has holes in his rotation and he wants to make sure deGoat is here to stay.
And obviously, he motivates himself by knowing what his competition is. He liked a tweet that said the Rays and Phillies are in on the deal to sign the pitcher.
We know that the New York Mets are not afraid, since the change of ownership, to take out the dollars in order to achieve their ends.
We also know that the club really needs pitchers… and who better than Jacob deGrom to form a one two punch interesting with Max Scherzer.
If the club fails to sign deGrom, expect a big pitcher (Carlos Rodon?) to be lured into town to have a great duo with Scherzer.
But with Cohen possibly down to second gear, I expect deGrom to have a very good offer on his table.
